Now I am going to show you how to build your online business in just 4 simple steps and become an authority in the industry.

Step 1: Choose an Interest

So what are you interested in? What do you have a passion for?

I have noticed that when I ask people what their passion is, 98% of the time they say they have no passion. To give an example, I was speaking with a colleague and the topic of online business and websites came up. When I asked her what she was passionate about, of course she said ‘nothing really’.

Whoa! You spent so much time discussing event management with me, sharing how you intend to develop more skills in this area so you can market yourself successfully, spent thousands of dollars to become certified, stressed yourself for months trying to meet strict deadlines and never gave up.

And even now you are still spending lots of time and energy on event management and enjoying it.

I call that passion!

It may not be something that intense for you, but here are a few ideas to jump-start your thinking engine.

  1. What are your hobbies? Gardening, dog training, playing a sport, cooking, decking out cars and SUVs?
  2. What about your own lifestyle? Do you enjoy shopping for new shoes and the latest dress in fashion? Do you like dining out? Do you travel a lot?
  3. What do your friends always turn to you for advice on? Relationships with the kids or the spouse, money management, an encouraging word, to help plan an event?
  4. Is there something you love to do but never considered it as a paid job? Like telling your friends about the great experience you had on your last Caribbean cruise. Or about the thrilling book you read in just one day.

Any and all of the above can be turned into an online business, using the steps I provide here. It just has to be something you are interested in, and would enjoy writing about and sharing with others.

I am a strong believer in enjoying your work. Years ago I heard hotel magnate Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart, owner of the Sandals Resorts Couples-Only Caribbean hotel chain say he has never worked a day in his life because he simply enjoys what he does so much.

So be sure to choose something that is intriguing to you. This is what you will be sharing online and presenting to your niche market. You want them to realize, through your writing and other communication, how much enjoy the subject area. You will build lots of trust with your readers, and create some valuable repeat visitors.

Don’t be concerned at this stage because you are not sure if you can make money in your area of interest. I will show you how to get the conversions (from visitor to buyer) a little later.

Step 2:  Build a Website

To maximize your earning potential online, you need a website.

This is the one ‘condition’ that deterred me from starting my own online business sooner. It always seemed like ‘a catch’ in whatever opportunity I was considering.

The number one reason for having a website is to provide quality, original content for your visitors, which will sufficiently inform them to make a purchase decision.

However, when writing content, you should just focus on the quality of the content so that your visitors understand that you are familiar with the product, service or concept, and they trust the information that you provide.

This may lead to a purchase or a decision not the purchase if you were expressing dissatisfaction with a product. But the idea is to be honest and but the necessary trust.

Your website will be the backbone of your business, so you want it to be easy to use, attractive, fast and reliable. It should always be accessible and easy to navigate, with relevant visuals (images, videos, charts).

And all of this is easy to do today, and I will show you how.

For example if you want your audience to know about the latest pair of heels you added to your shoe collection, or the must-have accessory you just fitted onto your spruced-up car, you may want to upload a video of you enjoying your big-girl swirl or big-boy toy.

Most times your visitors would rather see it than read page after page of descriptions. It will not always be possible, but when you can show it, go ahead and flaunt it.

Remember that quality content is crucial in this business, so along with the videos and images, a write-up is still required.

Step 3: Get Rankings and Visitors

These are your three managers when you have an online business. They pretty much control how you do things when you are at work.

But they can also become your best buddies, and you will soon be having drinks they paid for!

Always keep this very essential formula in mind:

When you have your own website, people need to know that you now have an online presence. And they find your website through the search engines.

The idea is to get visitors to your site so you can engage them with your own experiences of the products you have tried (which are the same products they are looking for based on their own keyword search in the engine).

You are simply providing them with an honest review of the item, so they can make an informed purchase or no-purchase decision.

If they decide to purchase, you earn revenue.

Your goal is to make your website SEO ready so that Google, Yahoo!, and Bing can find it. (By the way, SEO means Search Engine Optimization).

Google now owns just over two-thirds of all search traffic, and more than 95% of mobile searches, so you need them on your side.

There are several different elements the search engines look for when crawling the web to rank websites (pages), and much of it happens behind the scenes of your site and is not visible to visitors.
