A keyword is a sequence of words that people will enter into a search engine when they are looking for a product, a service or a concept, or when they have already identified such, but want to research it further.

For example, if your niche is about dogs being the companions of elderly persons, and your keyword is ‘paw print design fabric for babies’, then persons looking for the friendly, 4-legged companionship of a dog, will never reach your site, because they certainly will not be entering ‘paw print design fabric for babies’ into a search engine.
On the other hand, if your keyword is ‘companion dogs for the elderly’, or anything close to this, you are in a better place. This keyword is appropriate for your niche.
Your keyword must also be of a sound quality. A good quality keyword makes quite a bit of difference to the way you write your content.
I will just mention here briefly that website content is King. Content is of utmost importance when it comes to ranking in the search engines, but this is another topic on its own, and we will discuss it at length separately.
Content should flow naturally around the keyword, which should not be sticking out like a sore thumb simply because you want to use a potentially profitable keyword.
When doing research I like my keyword quality indicator to be 9 out of 10.
Who Is Searching
It is also good business sense to know exactly how many persons there are searching for a particular keyword each month. Knowing the volume of searches for each keyword would help you determine whether it would be worth it to use a particular keyword, modify it or change it altogether.
The average number of monthly searches for your keyword should be 100 or more.
Driving in the High-Traffic Lane
You can only get organic traffic to your website if your website is actually returned in the search results, and if it is returned in the first couple results pages.
People will hardly ever search past the first few results pages when they search online.
Therefore to get traffic to your site, you have to ensure that your keyword is appropriate, of good quality, your content is solid, and there are in fact people out there actually searching for your keyword.
Traffic is closely linked to where you fall in the search results, and where you fall is determined by the level of competition.
People focus a lot on the number of competitors. While the numbers are good to know, I pay more attention to the quality of the competition.
You can have 400 competitor websites in a particular niche competing on a particular keyword, but only 50 of them, 20, or only 10, may be of a high quality and ranked on the first and second pages of the search results. So while there may be a plethora of other websites with the same keyword, you will soon be ranking up there with the grown-up websites.

Know Your Competition

You can go ahead and write content around keywords that have 150 competitors or less. In the final analysis, your competition will be even fewer, as all 150 sites will not be ranked highly.
Some marketers believe that with up to 300 competitors you will still be able to rank very well in the results, so if there is a keyword you particularly like and the revealed competition is at this level, feel free to write content around it. I personally prefer to work with a maximum of 150 competitors. Then there is less drilling down to be done.
